A Guide to Recycling Your Mobile Phone

With bigger and better mobile phones coming out all the time, it’s no surprise that many of us have at least one or two old hand sets sitting around the house. Most of us these days have a mobile phone incentive contract which offers a new mobile every couple of years, meaning that in all likelihood you’re going to be getting a brand new phone sometime fairly soon. But just what should you do with that old hand set? We’re taking a look at all you need to know about mobile recycling, so if you’ve got old phones taking up space, keep reading!

Why Recycle at All?

Firstly, you might not actually want to sell or recycle that old phone. Why? Because having an extra hand set sitting around might not be a bad plan. Should your current phone break, get lost, or be stolen, that old phone might come in handy. Alternatively, you might want to consider giving your old mobile to a child or other family member, someone who could actually use it.

However, if you’re not interested in keeping an old hand set (or if you’ve got a couple floating around the house), then the benefit of selling or recycling your mobile comes down to one thing: money. Whether you choose to sell your mobile yourself or recycle it, you stand to make at least a few pounds from the deal, which can be pretty tempting!

Before You Do Anything Else!

Before you get rid of your phone you will need to make sure that it doesn’t contain any personal data. Given that many of us use our phones for all kinds of things from internet banking to sending business emails, it’s a good idea to ensure that your old hand set has no data whatsoever on it, since you don’t want your data getting into the wrong hands.

With most phones this is pretty simple. Much of your data will be on your SIM card anyway, but you’ll still need to wipe your hand set. Head into your settings menu and search for “factory reset.” Follow the instructions given to you and your phone will be wiped of data and back to the same condition it was in when you took it out of the box. Simple.

Fair warning: very tech savvy people can still retrieve that data after a factory reset. For most people this isn’t a very big worry, but if you happen to have extremely sensitive data on your mobile then you might want to consider going a step further. Once your phone is factory reset you can then fill it up with data again (an easy way to do this is to hook it up to your computer and transfer music files onto it), then factory reset it again. This makes the original older data more difficult to retrieve. Finally, give your phone a good clean with a lint free cloth, and make sure it’s looking great for potential buyers.

Selling Your Phone

Of course, you don’t have to use a recycling company to make money from your old phone, you could simply sell it yourself. Using eBay or CraigsList or Gumtree can be an easy enough way to make some cash out of your phone. In fact, you’re likely to make a little more money this way than if you used a recycling company.

There are two downsides to selling your phone yourself though. Firstly, it’s going to take time and effort, you’ll need to make a listing for your phone and field questions from buyers, you may need to meet buyers in person, or at least mail out your phone to whoever buys it. Secondly, there are few guarantees here. You might get conned, or in the case of personal meeting could even get hurt. Selling your phone yourself is a possibility, and a good one, but it’s also a bit of a hassle…

Phone Recycling Companies

For most people the easiest and most convenient way to make money from an old mobile hand set is to sell it to a recycling company. These companies pay money for old hand sets and then either refurbish the mobile or break it down and sell the parts. You’ll probably get a little less cash than selling privately, but the convenience of recycling companies makes up for this.

Firstly, you’ll need to compare companies and find out which will give you the best price for the model that you have. You then send the phone to the company you choose, and if the hand set meets their standards they’ll transfer money to you (through a bank or PayPal) or send you a cheque. Some companies even accept old or broken phones, though obviously you get less money for these.

However, it is extremely important that you read reviews of recycling companies before you commit. There are some unscrupulous companies out there, and since you’re required to send in your phone before receiving any cash, you’ll want to know that you’re dealing with a firm that’s trustworthy. Do also make sure that you read the terms and conditions of the company that you choose carefully, since these vary and you might find that whilst one company offers you a higher amount of cash they may be more stringent about what constitutes a “perfect” phone and can deduct a lot of money for things like scratches.

Need Cash? Sell that Phone

If you’ve got useless hand sets sitting in drawers then selling or recycling them can get you a little extra cash. You’ll also be helping the environment, since recycling or selling will mean less rubbish in land fills. You do need to choose your buyer carefully, but a little research should mean that you get a healthy injection of cash!
