A Guide to Buying a New Contract Phone

If you’re looking into signing a new mobile service contract, and hopefully getting your hands on an awesome new contract phone, then you’ve certainly got plenty of choice on the UK market. That means that you’re sure to find something to suit your needs, but it also means that choosing between all those options can be tough. But we’re here to advise you on everything you need to consider when looking into that whole contract issue. So before you panic, read on!

Mobile Operators and Service

The very first thing that you need to think about is whether or not you’re going to get service with a certain mobile operator. Not all operators serve all areas of the UK, so you’ll need to check and see which operators you have to choose from. OFCOM maintain a coverage map for all UK operators, and each operator should also have a coverage map on their own website. You need to ensure that a given company has solid coverage in your home area, or you’re not going to get reception!

One more thing to consider here is the kind of coverage that you’re going to need. Most operators have decent 3G coverage pretty much everywhere in their coverage area. But if you’re looking for super fast mobile data speeds with 4G, then your options might be more limited, and again, you’ll need to check coverage maps.

Finally, some operators “piggyback” on other operator’s networks. For example, Giff Gaff have their own phone plans and contracts, but they actually rent their network from O2. That means that if you’re looking at coverage with Giff Gaff, you should actually be looking at coverage with O2!

Service Plans

Once you’ve determined which operators you have to choose from, you’ll need to think about what kind of calling plan you want. This is where things can get a little tricky! Operators offer calling plans that are composed of three parts. You’ll have a calling minute limit, an SMS limit and a mobile data limit each month. It’s important that you estimate how many minutes, messages and MB of data you need as accurately as possible. If your calling plan is too big you’ll be paying for services you don’t use, and if it’s too small, you could end up paying hefty extra charges for going over your monthly limits.

If you’re not sure which size of plan is best for you it’s worth monitoring your usage for a week or so to find out how often you call, message and go online. Many mobiles will do this automatically, so hunt around in your phone’s settings menu to see if you can get your phone to do the work!

How Long Should My Contract Be?

If you’re signing a contract you’ll have different options when it comes to length, and not all operators offer the same contract lengths. Generally you can choose between a 24 month, 18 month, or 12 month contract. Some operators also have monthly contracts that roll over automatically each month but can be ended whenever you like. Consider contract length carefully, since breaking a mobile contract will mean paying some expensive fines!

If you’re looking to get a new phone included in your contract, then a longer contract will have cheaper monthly costs. This is because your new phone isn’t free! Instead the total cost of the phone is divided up and a monthly payment is added to your calling plan bill. With a longer contract the cost of the phone is divided into more payments, meaning each month’s bill is cheaper than if you choose a shorter contract. Rolling monthly contracts usually do NOT allow you to get a phone as well.

What Kind of Phone?

Which kind of phone you decide to get really depends on two things. The first of these is which models your chosen operator offers. Whilst nearly all operators will offer the same big name, flagship phones, not all operators offer the same selection of mid range or budget hand sets. So if you’re looking for something in particular, then you’ll need to check which operators have the model you want.

The second issue here is your needs. A top end phone will get great performance, and will look snazzy, but it’s also going to be expensive, and if you’re an average phone user you might not notice the difference in performance between a top end phone and something a little more affordable. Budget hand sets can be tempting, since your monthly bills will be pretty low, but performance might not be as fast or reliable as you’d like.

In general, you should know how much money you can afford to spend each month, and then choose the best phone that you can that falls within your budget. Look at specs on phones and compare things like screen size and resolution, the amount of memory you get, and the speed of the processor the phone has.

And the Reviews!

Last, but not least, before you sign that mobile contract and get your shiny new phone, you should take a look at some operator reviews. Why? Because not all operators offer the same value for money, and not all operators have the same level of customer service. Obviously, you don’t want to waste money when you could get a cheaper deal elsewhere. But should something go wrong with your phone or your service, then you’ll want to know that you’ll get fast, efficient and friendly customer support.

Choosing a new mobile operator, phone contract and mobile phone can seem daunting at first, since there’s just so many options and so much to think about. It might take a little time, but if you follow our guide, then you should find that you get a great contract and a great phone with a great operator. Then all you’ll need to do is pay your monthly mobile bill!
